Just one thing to think about though - practice space. There isn't enough in the city for all the teams, refs, raw meat as it is, so we would need to make sure we had a space available before we go getting any kidlets hopes up!

There isn't enough evening/weekend space for us working adults .... I'll bet if we looked at after school spots it would be a totally different story. As well, school gyms may open up to us if we offered programs for their students. Things we don't have access to for adults.....

i agree. I bet if we talked to some of the community rec associations we could get a few nights at a few different locations. And realistically, a kid would only practice 1-2 hours a week. its not that much.

So far not much luck with practice spaces --
Can rent at Stardust but avail times 3-5pm may not work for most
Community centers so far not seeming to understand the no - contact rules I seem to scare people off as soon as I mention Roller Derby.
Still looking though....

Squeegee have you talked to The Raw Meat Gang ? Kayla (snow crash) / Melinda ? They seem to have found smaller places that work for beginners. that wouldn't work for us. They might have some ideas.

Um ... I'm pretty sure Jr Derby is still a contact sport. I've definitely seen them hit each other. :)

Also - I would definitely cut out of work early one day every week to coach jr derby. If 3-5 is the only slot you can find, I'm still in!

I can see 8-12 years being 'flag' derby or only using positional blocking. Then maybe the older girls can be divided into 12-15 & 15-18 or by height / weight. I guess the problem isn't so much they're all growing at differing speeds, it's that their parents would be up in arms .

Full size adult derby has all different ages & heights / weights, right?

Seattle Derby Brats:

Levels & Requirements
League members should be 8 years old on or before January 31, 2011. Level placement is determined by
coaches based on a skills assessment.
• Tootsy Rollers (Positional Blocking)
• Juniors Level I (Positional Blocking)
• Juniors Level II (Full Contact)
• Travel Team (Full Contact)

It makes way more sense to split people up based on skills rather than age.
So I really like that actually!

:)

We use Thunderbird community centre for raw meat, and its really affordable.

Hey again

Let me know if you want help building an actual training plan/program! I have experience and can totally work on this.... I'm also interested in coaching at least once a week. :)
